Our Positions on Chico's Major Issues

THe General Plan

The Esplanade League believes that it is imperative to have progressive city counselors who will take a thoughtful, visionary and sustainable approach to the New general Plan. The opposition will plan for more sprawl, more malls, more parking lots and more giveaways of precious agricultural land for unsupportable development. A progressive city council can be counted upon to maintain Chico values, Chico quality of life, safety and health, and thoughtful growth.

Better planning for more sustainable growth

  • Compact growth to prevent sprawl, with growth boundaries and quality infill
  • Neighborhoods designed for a sense of community, with narrower streets and ample shade trees
  • Greater choice of housing styles, designed for more affordable ownership and rent
  • Alternative building and design standards
  • Protect the environment, groundwater, streams, agricultural resources, and our urban forest
  • Reduce traffic by designing development for improved traffic circulation, less reliance on autos, better access to public transit and safe pedestrian-bicycle routes.
  • Building and transitioning for sustainable energy
  • Adequate community services and facilities, paid for by new development to avoid burdening the City and current residents.

Responsible economic growth

  • Promote sustainable economic activities, with quality jobs and affordable wages.
  • Preserve agricultural productivity and jobs as an important segment of Chico's economy
  • Locally appropriate corporate design and parking requirements

Maintain a strong sense of community

  • Protect and celebrate Chico's cultural heritage and diversity.
  • Promote the Esplanade as a symbol of our community
  • Promote cultural and artistic development

Support important human needs

  • High quality schools, youth programs and child care.
  • Adequate parks, recreation and open space
  • Care for the disabled, homeless, and victims of violence and abuse

Collaborative efforts

  • Promote City/County partnerships
  • Involve community groups and neighborhood association
