The Esplanade will always be a symbol that encompasses the entire community as a metaphor for thoughtful, appropriate growth and change. The Esplanade represents the community's preferred route to the future, one that respects genuine local tradition and values a comprehensive community perspective. Just as the Esplanade has, for multiple generations, symbolized Chico's best and broadest vision of itself, The Esplanade League is committed to extend that vision to future generations as well.

The Esplanade League is dedicated to the principle that the entire community must be informed about the issues and decisions that affect Chico's quality of life. For that reason, The Esplanade League will educate the public and inform residents through roundtable discussions and community workshops.

The Esplanade League is also dedicated to promoting local leaders who envision a carefully chosen path for Chico's future and who support the practical steps and policies necessary to translate these ideals into day to day reality.

2008 City Council Election Endorsements

The Esplanade League proudly endorses four candidates for the November 4 Chico City Council election: Ann Schwab, Andy Holcombe, Jim Walker and Ali Sarsour. All offer a combination of experience and progressive values to carry forward the excellent progress begun by our current Council majority:

  • Stopping Bidwell Ranch development and permanently protecting this valued open space asset.
  • Responding to the financial crunch by adopting a solid new budget.
  • Voting to prioritize sustainability, energy efficiency, and earth-friendly policies in the upcoming General Plan and to prepare an aggressive Climate Action Plan designed to sharply reduce local greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
  • Establishing departments of Housing and Neighborhood Services and Economic Development to respond to the needs of Chico citizens and the future economy.
  • Protecting local business by requiring strict environmental and traffic review for proposed Wal Mart super centers, forcing one to withdraw from consideration.
  • Requiring development to pay its fair share for city streets and parks and to reduce its impacts on the environment.

Andy Holcombe

  • Voted to preserve 700+ acres of open space near Upper Bidwell Park
  • Promoted stronger neighborhood services

Ann Schwab

  • Led City’s environmental initiatives as
    Sustainability Task Force Chair
  • Small business co-owner of Campus Bicycles

Jim Walker

  • 18 years on Park C ommission and CARD Board
  • Involved in DeGarmo Park, Oak Way Park, and 20th St Park

Ali Sarsour

  • Chair of Chico Interfaith Council
  • Chair of City Human Resources Commission

Ann and Andy have provided strong leadership during these tenuous times. They prize thoughtful growth, value Chicos leadership in the municipal environmental movement, and actively pursue economic development that is compatible with Chicos progressive values.

Jim Walker, born and raised in Chico, is a health professional with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He has 18 years of public service with CARD and the Parks Commission and holds strong environmental and progressive values.

Ali Sarsour is president of Chicos Interfaith Council and chair of Chicos City Human Resources Commission, and has been an active member of Chicos peace and social justice movement for many years.

Hard work and generous support from the Chico community has created the opportunity for many positive changes by our City Council. You can help the Esplanade to continue supporting this trend by donating to our election campaigns, volunteering to make phone calls and help with events, and/or getting on our email list for information about important public hearings and events that will influence Chicos future.
